'Maharaja' has earned Rs 91 crore in China. As the film nears the Rs 100 crore mark, the success of Indian films in China has once again been discussed. In the past few years, films like 'Dangal,' 'Secret Superstar,' and 'Andhadhun' have attracted huge crowds in China. Similarly, 'RRR' and 'Pushpa 2' have also done well in other Asian countries includingJapan. However, these blockbusters have not been able to break the 'Ha' record at the Chinese box office set by an Indian film that was released 54 years ago.

A film that sold 300 million tickets in China

When it comes to the international success of Indian films, it is very difficult to repeat the success of the 1971 film 'Karwaan' in China. Made on a very low budget, the film starred Jitendra and Asha Parekh in the lead roles. Directed by Nasir Hussain, the film was a superhit in India, grossing 3.6 crores, making it the sixth highest-grossing film of 1971. However, the film gained real fame 8 years later when it was released in China.'Karwaan' sold 8.8 crore tickets in its first release in China, making it the highest-grossing foreign film in China at that time.
'Karwaan' was so popular that it was re-released in China several times. With such re-releases, the film's total audience crossed the 300 crore mark. This surpassed the record set by 'Sholay' in India and the record set by 'Awara' in the Soviet Union.

Why is 'Karwaan' a bigger success than 'Dangal,' 'RRR,' and 'Pushpa 2'?

'Dangal' is considered the most successful Indian film in China with a gross of $238 million. The film sold 43.1 million tickets in China. Also, SS Rajamouli's 'RRR' created history by breaking records in the US and Japan. The film earned around $20 million in these two countries, but sold only 3 million tickets together. 'Pushpa 2: The Rule' has sold 60 million tickets in India in its first month and an estimated 10 million tickets
internationally. But even these figures cannot come close to the success achieved by 'Karvaan'.

Briefly about 'Caravan'

'Karwaan' is probably the most watched Indian film in theatres, as it has sold 320 million tickets worldwide. However, since most of this ticket sales were from re-releases, this record remains with 'Sholay'. 'Sholay' had sold 20 million tickets during its original run. 'Karwaan' was a crime thriller based on the 1953 film 'Girl on the Run'. It starred Jitendra, Asha Parekh, Aruna Irani, Mehmood Jr., and Helen. The songs from the film – 'Chadhti
Jawani,' 'Piya Tu Ab To Aaja,' 'Dilbar Dil Se Pyare,' and 'Kitna Pyara Vada' – were huge hits. 'Karwaan' grossed 35 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Indian films of the 1970s and 1980s.
